Monday, August 3, 2015 on the Doctor Ira Breite Internal Medicine Show on SiriusXM 81: Doctor Radio

Oh, its August.  You're traveling, your avoiding work, your thinking about cool drinks with little umbrellas in them.  But something is nagging you.  In your regular, non-summer life, you're a little perturbed about you niece that just seems a little off.  Or your a school teacher and vividly remember how one particular kid seemed so sad.  Join me and fellow Doctor Radio Host Dr. Jess Shatkin as we talk about his new book, Treating Child & Adolescent Mental Illness: A Practical, All-in-One Guide.

Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

After that, we will have a fact and fun filled show with gastroenterology updates, internal medicine questions answered, guests, and, of course, more exposition on my favorite new word: "gastipation."

Question for me?  Send me a tweet!

Monday, March 30th on the Internal Medicine Show with Doctor Ira Breite on SiriusXM 81: Doctor Radio!

Monday's show could pretty much be called the "Sum of All Fears...:" at least my fears.  Starting with sudden death in young athletes.  Now, while I'm not young, I do have young, athletic children.  And although I know its rare, it does sort of freak me out a bit when I hear about some kid in high school or college collapsing on the field.  Join me and Dr. Kevin Campbell as we talk about this rare, but scary issue.

Then onto flying.  Now, I fly a decent amount, but the whole process is something I could live without.  From getting to the plane anxiety, to getting through security anxiety, to did they give my seat away anxiety, to what if all that physics stuff is wrong anxiety, to did they lose my luggage anxiety (well this one is usually true), I find flying an anxiety provoking experience.  Join me and Dr. Reid Wilson, PhD of the University of North Carolina as we talk about fear of flying.

Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS

Next anxiety: cancer.  We always talk about alcohol and heart health.  But what about cancer? Join me and Dr. Mitchell Gaynor as we talk about how much alcohol it takes to turn you from pleasantly toasted to cancer victim.  Is red wine better?  How about quitting?

We will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all...anything you forgot to ask your doctor ask me! Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS or send me a tweet.

We will have Gastroenterology Update, where I will tell you the latest and greatest in the world of digestive disease and answer your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Twins. Twins.  Yes, it sounds so nice I had to say it twice.  But what can twins tell us about health?  Join me as we discuss a new study looking at pairs of physically active versus physically inactive twins.  Even with the same genes, exercise really matters!

We will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all...anything you forgot to ask your doctor ask me!  Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS or send me a tweet.

We then have an hour in the office.  A combined Gastroenterology Update and Ask Doctor Ira...just like my real office...give me a call or a tweet at 1-877-NYU-DOCS.

Monday, October 26th on the Doctor Ira Breite Internal Medicine Show on SiriusXM 81: Doctor Radio

We have a pretty incredible show planned for tomorrow.  Dr. Anish Sheth, gastroenterologist and the author of several books on poo and pee, has a new book out: What's Your Baby's Poo Telling You? I'll be honest, I don't remember it telling me much more than "I stink" and "Change me.  Change me NOW!" but apparently there is a lot more to it.  We'll find out.

Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

After that we will have Digestive Disease Update, where I will tell you some of the latest and greatest news in the world of digestive disease and answer your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS.

I have been enjoying my birthday gifts tremendously.  First amongst them is the pasta maker I received from my children.  The good news is I have gotten pretty darn good at making fresh pasta (thank you Mario Batali!).  The bad news is that heartburn abounds and I may be coughing a bit.  Join me and Dr. Jamie Koufman, the author of "Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook and Cure" as we talk about silent reflux, laryngeal reflux, and all of those other non-heartburn related reflux symptoms!

We will then expand the conversation to all of digestive disease.  During Gastroenterology Update I will tell you some of the latest and greatest news from the world of digestive disease and answer your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!  Tweet me as well.

As much as I love treating digestive disease, I can not lie: treating irritable bowel syndrome can be difficult.  Alternative therapy is just that: but for IBS it may be a reasonable option if more routine measures don't work.  Join me as I speak with Dr. Mark Weisberg and Dr. Gregory Plotnkioff as we speak about their new book Trust Your Gut: Get Lasting Healing from IBS and Other Chronic Digestive Problems Without Drugs.  Find out what they have to say about trusting your gut, and give us a call with your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Monday, December 10th on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on SiriusXM 81: Doctor Radio!

Ok, its the holidays.  Frankincense, myrrh, and all that.  I'll be honest, if it wasn't for spell checker  I never would have gotten those words out.  At least I can spell gold.  But what does this have to do with medicine?  Find out with Dr. Jim Duke, PhD: ethnobotanist and author of more than thirty books as we talk about Biblical Herbs and Modern Day Medicine.

We will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all: anything you forgot to ask your doctor ask me!  Give me a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Although people always think of winter as cold and flu season, there is a lot of weird that occurs during the summer months.   One of those things is pericarditis, or inflammation around the heart sac.   Goofy.  Misdiagnosed as heart attacks, asthma, esophagitis.  Find out about this not uncommon condition with me and Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Siegel.  Chest pain questions?  Call 1-877-NYU-DOCS.

We will end the show, as usual, with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all.  Anything you forgot to ask your doctor, ask me?  Call me at 1-877-NYU-DOCS or follow me on Twitter and send me a message!

Monday, November 7th,2011 on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on SiriusXM 81: Doctor Radio!

I hope everyone is having a good day. The American College of Gastroenterology Meetings are over. We have lots of new GI news to talk about from these meetings. This is also my first post on my new computer, with its new (improved?) keyboard and trackpad instead of a mouse. I'm not sure I like it better, but it does bring to mind how various workplace issues that seem minor can have a profound effect. And some of the topics we are talking about show the same thing in caring for patients with digestive disease.

Starting with music. When I do procedures such as colonoscopies, we often have music playing in the background. I often ask patients what they want to hear: their inevitable response is "whatever makes you work better!" But what if what made me work better was not something I particularly wanted to hear: what if it was, well, Mozart? Join me and Dr. David Wolf, a Gastroenterologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Dr. Noelle O'Shea, A GI Fellow there, as we talk about their new study on the "Mozart Effect" and colonoscopy polyp detection.

What was going on in the room right before you had your colonoscopy? Call us at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a vexing problem for doctors and patient's alike. Its cause is unclear and it can be difficult to treat. Join me and Dr. Yuri Saito-Loftus of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, as we talk about her new study looking at the link between psychological issues, trauma and the development of IBS that she just presented at the ACG meeting. Dr. Saito-Loftus is a member of the Clinical Enteric Neuroscience Translational and Epidemiological Research (CENTER) Program at Mayo as well.

IBS? Call us with your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

I don't "do" my nails. Heck, I have so little hair I hardly get it cut anymore. But are you at risk for infectious diseases from getting your nails done? Can you get hepatitis? Join me and former ACG President Dr. David Johnson as we talk about studies presented at the ACG talking about just that!

Call us with any questions about personal safety and beautification at 1-877-NYU-DOCS

We will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all give me a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS! Anything you forgot to ask your doctor: ask me!

Happy Halloween! We have a show that should entertain, educate, and scare you a bit planned for tomorrow.

Starting with your kids. As a parent of teenagers, I'm probably more scared of them then they are of anything, but I do remember them being a bit creeped out by the "haunted apartment building" we went to when they were smaller. Join me and Dr. Stephen Garber, PhD of The Behavioral Institute of Atlanta and the author of Is Your Child Hyperactive?, Monsters Under The Bed and Other Childhood Fears as we talk about things that go bump in your children's minds during the night!

Kids with fears or phobias? Funny scared kid Halloween Story? ...let us know at 1-877-NYU-DOCS

After this we have Gastroenterology Update with a touch of Ask Doctor Ira thrown in for good measure. Anything you forgot to ask your doctor ask me at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

And what about chance Halloween exposures to snakes? Or Spiders? Join me and Dr. Sean Bush of the Loma Linda School of Medicine: ER doctor and herpephile. As is he really likes snakes. And lizards. You are not going to want to miss this.

Questions about the health issues in our cold blooded friends? Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Halloween usually brings a lull in Lyme Disease to New York City...we stop going to all those places with actual trees or brush so near our homes. But not today! Find out what Lyme disease may have had to do with the Salem Witch Trials with my guest, author MM Drymon.

Spooky.

Monday, April 25th on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on Sirius 114 and XM 119: Doctor Radio!

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I am, except for the fact that the NY Rangers just got eliminated from the playoffs (sigh). The Knicks are playing this afternoon...not looking good. Watching the game yesterday almost gave me a heart attack...which brings us to the first topic on Monday's show.

Aspirin. Its a headache cure. It is heart protective. It also causes bleeding, sometimes in the brain. Should you take it? Alfred A. Bartolucci, Ph.D. may have some of the answers. He just completed an analysis of 9 clinical trials looking at whether aspirin prevents heart attacks and death. Find out about the study, and find out if taking aspirin is right for you!

Call us with your aspirin questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

I've been told by my wife that men do not think with their brains. Now it turns out that the brains of men and women may be guided by what lives in your digestive tract! Dr. Sven Pettersson, Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology at the Karolinska Institute will be joining us to talk about his new research showing that brain development is guided by the bacteria in your gut! Yes!

Questions about the mind gut interaction? I know I have them! Ask your at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

We are going to continue our gut conversation at the top of our second hour! Bert Agus, MD, rheumatologist at NYU Langone and Doctor Radio Regular, will be joining us to talk about the relationship between diseases of the gut, such as Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. I wonder if bacteria has been implicated in those diseases as well? Find out and call us with your questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

We will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical questions at all and I will be glad to answer...anything you forgot to ask your doctor ask me! Give me a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

The use of activated charcoal for gas and bloating.

A listener called today and asked if there was a cancer risk to the use of activated charcoal. I wasn't sure, but thought not. When we grill, the risk (if any!) is in the complicated organic compounds that occur when high heat and meat are exposed to each other. Having said that, I looked it up. In general: Charcoal may or may not be helpful for gas and bloat, such as that caused by IBS. Studies are all conflicting and old

No where did I see anything about a long term cancer risk from the use of activated charcoal. Having said that, there appears to be no studes.

There are enough scary side effects, such as black stools...that I would and do not routinely recommend charcoal use for gas and bloat.

Monday, April 4th, 2011 on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on Sirius 114 and XM 119: Doctor Radio!

If you had celiac disease or were living gluten free, how would you feel if somebody dismissed your dietary and health issues outright? That's what one New York City chef recently did. Join me and registered dietitian Rachel Begun, MS, as we talk about the dangers of eating gluten if you do have celiac disease. We will also talk about how to avoid gluten in stores and restaurants, and what you can do if someone with gluten sensitivity is coming to your house!

Call us with you celiac questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Although we may wonder what is in our food, its also a good idea to wonder where our food comes from. The journalist David Kirby has written a new book called "Animal Factory," which documents the medical problems of living near a farm producing meat. Meat is cheap in the United States, but is there a price beyond that which we pay in the supermarket?

Call us with your questions on this fascinating topic at 1-877-NYU-DOCS.

Next, a topic near and dear to my cranky middle aged male heart: Jed Diamond, PhD, the author of the new book "Mr. Mean," will be coming on the show to discuss male menopause, irritable male syndrome and male type depression. Men, find out whats happening to you. Ladies, find out how to make that man do what he should do?

Cranky middle aged man? Married to one? Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

We will end the show with ask doctor ira, where you can ask me any questions that you forgot to ask your own doctor...give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Although rare, true allergies to various birds have been reported. Join me and allergist Dr. Julie Wang of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York as we speak about food allergy dangers.

Call us with your food allergy questions at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Monday, October 26th 2010 on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on Sirius 114 and XM 119: Doctor Radio!

Superheroes and Super-Gastroenterology. We have an excellent show planned, with topics ranging from heartburn to superheroes to the latest and greatest in the world of digestive diseases!

First the reflux. I'm not totally sure why, but the fall is one of the busier times of year for people to come into the office complaining of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Although I'm very good at dispensing medication and talking about the latest study on the efficacy of anti-reflux surgery, I often get stuck with that most basic of questions: "what should I eat?" Join me and Dr. Jamie Koufman as we talk about her new bood: "Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook and Cure." The book is a groundbreaking approach to healthy eating, and features 75 recipes!

If you have any questions (or tips) about eating with reflux, give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Last week I was trying to get downtown in a taxi and was literally stopped when thousands of people dressed as everything from Superman to Pikachu left the Javitz Center here in New York City. They were all at the NY "Comic Con." Dr. Daniel Debowy was there as well, speaking about "Psychiatry and the Superhero," where he talked about what might be going on inside the head of Gotham's favorite Superhero, Batman. I wish there were some great medical thing I could put to this, but frankly I am just really curious as to what Dr. Debowy has to say!

Ever wonder about the psychology of superheroes, or what we like in them....give us call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Last week, many of my colleagues were at the American College of Gastroenterology's meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Lots of interesting studies were presented on a wide variety of topics: hear Dr. David Johnson, the past President of the ACG and Professor and Chief of GI at Eastern University School of Medicine in Norfolk, Va, as we talk about some of the "hot topics" in GI and what it may mean for you and your family!

Digestive questions? Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Of course, its not only digestive questions that we deal with. We will have a full segment of "Ask Doctor Ira," where you can ask me any question on any medical topic at all...whatever you forgot to ask your doctor ask me! Call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Monday, October 18th on the Doctor Ira Breite Show on Sirius 114 and XM 119: Doctor Radio

Surrounded by cell phones, laptops, desktops, TVs and all kinds of electronic stuff? Who isn't? Did you ever wonder if all of the electromagnetic radiation was harmful? I certainly have. Its a controversial topic, and the answers are not at all clear. Joining me to talk about this are Ronald B. Herberman, M.D, who testified before Congress on tumors and cell phone use. Also joining me is Ann Louise Gittleman, the author of "Zapped," which talks about ways to avoid electronic pollution in your life.

If you've ever wondered about all that electronic "stuff" being emitted and whether it can harm you, and have questions on how to avoid it, give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

I was going to start my next topic by making a joke about it being "snippy." And then I realized I was a physician at a major medical center in the United States. And then I couldn't help myself. Sorry. Dr. Emily Taylor of NYU Langone Medical Center will be joining me to talk about the potential benefits of circumcision. I can't promise you that you'll be calling your urologist anytime soon, but this is an important and controversial topic, and anyone thinking about children or hoping for a grandchild will want to hear what Dr. Taylor has to say!

Questions about circumcision? Give us call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS.

I had my first MRI this year. Besides signing for insurance and all kinds of financial stuff, I clearly remember being asked, repeatedly, about whether I had a pacemaker or other implantable device in me. And although I always envision that scene from "Alien" when the alien pops out that guys body when thinking about what would happen if you had a pacemaker and had an MRI, in truth I have no idea what would happen. Join me and Dr. J. Rod Gimbel, a cardiologist and expert on pacemakers and MRI safety, to talk about this important issue.

If you've ever wondered if its safe to get an MRI, and what can help in the future, give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!

Of course, we will end the show with Ask Doctor Ira, where you can ask me any questions on any medical topic at all, and I will be happy to answer. Give us a call at 1-877-NYU-DOCS!
